ASCII Nudes Gallery Re-Design

Comments: No Comments
Published on: April 2, 2014
It was time for a re-design of my ASCII Nudes gallery. I had 3 main goals in mind. Make the original photographs or pictures used by the artists as reference accessible directly within the gallery. Previously those were only available via an older blog post of mine. Allow easier navigation of the gallery. I accomplished that by providing full keyboard control throughout the gallery and by providing the ability to jump to the next piece directly from the detail overlay screen, without the need to go back to the main gallery grid. As mentioned in 2. already. I am using overlays now instead of annoying pop-ups or new browser windows.   The Boss-Key feature is still around, although not via the big red prominent button as before. Now a simple pressing of the letter “b” on your keyboard will do the trick. If you press “b” for a second time, you will be back where you left of before. Keyboard Shortcuts Available in the Detail Overlay: a = show ASCII Version p = show Photo (if available) s = show Side by Side (if available) + = (The + on the Key Pad) Increase Font Size (only available in ASCII View Mode) – = (The – on the Key Pad) Decrease Font Size (only available in ASCII View Mode) d = Download Original ASCII Text File Arrow Right = Next Piece Arrow Left = Previous Piece ESC = Close Overlay h = Show Keyboard Shortcuts Help b = BOSS Key[…]

Welcome to a new installment of my ASCII to Unicode/HTML converter tool. I renamed it to “Suite”, because there are actually three individual tools part of the whole package. Main focus is still the conversion of “High-ASCII” or “Block ASCII” art for the display on your web site, but it offers a few more things than that also. Release Notes A little toolset that converts MS DOS ASCII files, such as NFO’s or FILE_ID.DIZ text files (Code Page 437, USA and other) to HTML encoded Unicode (Output is still an ASCII file) that can be used to display the ASCII art, specifically the “High ASCII” or  block ASCII art on a web site. You can also convert the ASCII files to real Unicode Text files for the use in Windows Apps. There are 3 different programs. “batchconvert2.exe” is the ASCII to Unicode converter with a simple step by step user interface (see the image, file name: “Batch-ASCII2WebOrUniCode-Steps20.jpg” in the sub-folder “screenshots” for illustration. “batchconvert2cli.exe” provides the same features as “batchconvert2.exe” but as an command-line tool for easy batch processing from a .BAT script etc. “ASCIIConverterExtendedGUI1.exe” is a new version of my tool with a more user friendly single screen user interface. This version also provides some new features not available in the other two programs. You can convert Unicode text files or HTML encoded Unicode ASCII to MS-DOS ASCII text files. See some screen shots of the interface in the “screenshots” sub folder. I decided to only include the .VBS[…]

This is an update to my  little script that converts MS DOS ASCII files, such as NFO’s  or FILE_ID.DIZ text files (Code Page 437, USA) to ASCII files with HTML encoded Unicode characters and also to Unicode text for the use in MS Windows. The HTML encoded ASCII files can be used to display the ASCII art, specifically the “High ASCII” or block ASCII art on a web site. The script is written in VBScript, but the release package also includes a Windows executable, which is the VBScript converted via VBSEdit by Adersoft. I used the same script to prepare the ASCIIs in my text art galleries on my web site, such as: My ASCII Art Gallery My Early ASCII Art Gallery Various ASCII Art by Others or my FILE_ID.DIZ Collection just to name a few. You can download the script here:   ROY-BATCHCONVERT-ASCII2WEB2.ZIP (700KB) The Release NFO File ▄▄▄▄▄▄ ▄▄▄▄▄ ▄▄▄▄▄ █▄ ▀███████████▄▄ ▄ ▄▄ ▄▄██████████▀████▀▀███▄ ▄▄████████▄ ▀█▓█ ▀████ ▄███ ▄▄▓▓▓█ ▄██████▀▀ █▒▓█ ███▀ █▓▓█ █████▀▀ ██▀█▀▄ ██▓█ █▓▓██ ██▓▓█ █▓▓▒▒▓█ ███▓██▀ ██▓██▐██ █▓▓▌ ██▓█▀ ▐▀ ▐ ▌ ████ ▐█▒▓▓█ ▄▄████▄ ██▓█ █▓▒░▒▓▌ █████ ████ ██▌ ▐▓▓█▌ █▓▓▓▌ ▌ ▐ ▌ ████ ▄▄█▓█▀▀ ▄██▀▀ ███▐███ █▓▒░▓█ ▀███▄ ▀ ▄███▀▄▄▄ ██▓██ █▓▒█ ▀▀▀▄▄▄ █ ▐▌ ▀██▀███▄▄ ███▌ ▐▓▒▓▌███▄ ██▓▓█ ▄▄▄ ▀▀████▄▄ ▀███▌ ▀▀▀██████ █▓▒█ ▀▀ █ █ ▀█ ▀█▄ ▀█ █▓▒▓█▀███▄ ███▓█ ▐█ ▀▌ ▀█▓▓█ ███ ▀████ █▓▓█ █ ▐▌ ▐▌ █ █▌ █▄ ▄█▒░▒█▌ ▀███████▌ ▀▌ █ █▒▓█▐██ █ ▀█ ██▓▓▌ ██▄ █ █ ▐▌ ▐█ █████▓░▒▓█ ▀▀████ █▄▄█▌[…]

I wasn’t really happy with how my ASCII nude’s gallery One thing that bugged me the most was that it was hard to find a certain piece and that the selection was somewhat confusing. The confusion came from overload. I wanted to put too much stuff into too little space. I added a couple months ago the feature of having the selection boxes with the image thumbnails of the 100 ASCII art pieces scroll horizontally, which looked nice, but did not really help with the usability. So I removed it again (It wasn’t with Internet Explorer anyway). The selection is now again a grid (10 x 10), as it was at the beginning. See the partial screen shot of gallery page below where you can see how the grid looks today. First thing you will notice is that there is only one thumbnail image for each ASCII now; instead of two (the second thumb was showing the image with white font on black background). The second thing you will notice is the larger preview thumb which is 400 pixels high for vertical pictures and 400 pixels wide for horizontal pictures. The preview thumb appears when you hover over one of the hundred mini thumbnails (which get’s highlighted when hovered over). There was a bug with the highlighting border of the picture that is currently shown in full, which I believe I got fixed now as well. From the grid are you still having the fairly new features that I did[…]
